Chameleons are quirky eaters—and while they’ll happily gobble up a moving insect, not all foods are safe, and some can cause serious health problems.

In this article, we’ll break down what NOT to feed a chameleon, why certain insects and fruits are dangerous, and how to build a safe feeding routine that supports strong bones, hydration, and long-term health.

🦗 1. Wild-Caught Insects

They might be free, but they’re not safe.

Why it’s bad:

  • Wild bugs may carry pesticides, parasites, or pathogens
  • No control over their diet = poor nutrition for your pet
  • Risk of introducing mites or other pests to the enclosure

Stick to farm-raised feeders like crickets, dubia roaches, and silkworms.

🍽️ 2. Insects Without Gut-Loading or Dusting

Feeding plain crickets or roaches is like serving an empty plate.

Mistake:

  • Not gut-loading insects with fresh veggies 24 hours before feeding
  • Not dusting with calcium + D3 powder

Result: Weak bones, metabolic bone disease (MBD), stunted growth

🍉 3. Too Much Fruit

Some chameleon species (like veileds) can tolerate small amounts of fruit—but too much sugar leads to digestive problems.

Fruits to avoid:

  • Citrus (orange, lemon, lime) — acidic, causes mouth sores
  • Banana — high in phosphorus, poor calcium ratio
  • Apple seeds — contain cyanide
  • Watermelon — mostly water, little nutrition

Offer fruit only sparingly and only when appropriate for your species.

🍕 4. Human Food or Table Scraps

Chameleons are strict insectivores (with rare exceptions). Human food—even “healthy” snacks—is off-limits.

Never feed:

  • Bread or pasta
  • Dairy (yogurt, cheese)
  • Meat scraps
  • Cooked food of any kind

🦴 5. Mealworms (in excess)

Mealworms are tough to digest due to their hard exoskeleton (chitin). In large amounts, they can cause impaction.

Use only as:

  • An occasional treat
  • A variety item, not a staple
  • Pre-softened or in small sizes for baby chameleons

✅ Safe Insects to Feed Instead

  • Crickets (gut-loaded + dusted)
  • Dubia roaches
  • Silkworms
  • Hornworms
  • Black soldier fly larvae

Always use variety and balance calcium with proper UVB lighting.
